Joy of Make: A Creative Gift That Started from a Kitchen Table
In a small house on the outskirts of Seattle, designer Lila once worried about her daughter Mia’s digital dependency—screens had taken up too much of the child’s after-school time, and the imagination that should have sparkled was gradually hidden behind the swipes of her fingertips. One weekend afternoon, Lila dug out pieces of fabric, seashells, and colored strings left by her grandmother, spreading them out on the kitchen table: “Let’s make a little ornament that’s just yours.”

To her surprise, this impromptu suggestion lit up Mia’s eyes. She threaded the needle clumsily, strung seashells into a wind chime, and folded colorful paper into crooked little birds. Even with glue on her fingertips and messy knots, she remained focused and joyful. When the finished piece hung by the window, making a crisp sound as the wind blew, Mia hugged Lila and shouted excitedly: “Mom, I made this! I created it myself!”
At that moment, Lila suddenly realized: what children need is not perfect toys, but the joy and sense of achievement that comes from creating with their own hands—the focus that flows through their fingertips and the confidence gained from trial and error are gifts that screens can never offer. She began inviting Mia’s little friends over for craft sessions, and discovered that every child could unleash their unique creativity through cutting, pasting, and decorating: some turned buttons into a starry sky, others shaped clay into fairy-tale castles, and some painted wood slices in rainbow colors to use as bookmarks.

These whimsical, childlike creations inspired Lila with an idea: to let children from families across Europe and America experience the magic of handcrafting. And so, Joy of Make was officially born in 2018. From simple craft kits at the very beginning to today’s diverse range covering beading, pottery, embroidery, button art, and more, every product has stayed true to the original vision of safety, ease of use, and high creativity. We select non-toxic, eco-friendly materials and pair them with clear, easy-to-follow illustrated instructions—lowering the barrier to entry while leaving plenty of room for children’s imagination.
Lila still remembers an email from a mother: “My son could never sit still for five minutes before, but now he can quietly finish an entire wind chime kit, and even proudly gave his creation to his grandparents as a gift.” This is exactly the mission of Joy of Make: we don’t just sell craft supplies—we share the joy of hands-on creation, letting every child discover their own creativity through every stitch, every paste, and every weave, and hold onto the most precious focus and happiness of childhood.

Today, Joy of Make’s craft kits have found their way into tens of thousands of families across Europe and America, turning dining tables, desks, and balconies into tiny creative workshops. And this warmth and creativity, which started at a kitchen table, continues to spread—because we firmly believe that every child is a born creator, and the joy of making things by hand deserves to be seen in every family.
